TIPS for those new to cycling

  • Remember for all bolts/nuts it is "Righty Tighty and Lefty Loosey" EXCEPT for the left pedal.

  • Always carry two spare inner tubes and a pump/gas/aerosol/tyre levers.

  • Regularly examine your tyres for embedded flints/glass and remove them. (easier than a puncture repair) .

  • Always carry some form of identification and contact names etc .

  • Carry some money, paper, pen.

  • Check over your bike the night before a morning ride.

Repairing a puncture on a ride

  • Find a safe place to stop off the road/lane (ie layby or field entrance).
  • For a rear puncture change to the smallest sprocket.

  • You may have to release your brakes depending on the type and tyre width.

  • Remove the wheel and look for signs of puncture and remove (.ie. flint ).

  • Using tyre levers remove one side of the tyre from the rim.

  • Remove the inner tube and carefully run your fingers around the inside of the tyre.

  • Remove any material projecting through the tyre.

  • Lightly inflate the spare inner tube and insert the valve through the hole in the rim.

  • Push the inner tube over the rim and into the tyre.

  • Deflate the tube a little and starting opposite the valve to push the tyre on to the rim.

  • Only use your fingers and as it gets tighter deflate the inner tube further.

  • Folding tyres are easier to fit.

  • When the tyre is fitted, push the valve up into the tyre and pull down again.

  • Inflate the tyre and fit the dust cap and refit the wheel.

  • Coil up the punctured tube for repair later (don't mix it up with a good one).
